Students in grades 6–12 are eligible to participate in Nova Research. The program is designed to accommodate a range of experience levels, providing structured mentorship and resources to support students at every stage of their research journey.

Submit an online application, and if selected, you’ll be invited to a video interview to discuss your research interests and goals. Following this, our admissions team reviews applications based on academic interest, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to research. Accepted students are then matched with expert mentors in their chosen field and receive onboarding materials to begin their research journey!
For many students, Nova Scholar is a premier summer program, but we also offer programs year-round, including Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions. Over the summer, students often take advantage of our summer offerings by enrolling in two concurrent tracks—Patent and Research—to maximize their experience. Whether you're looking for an immersive summer opportunity or a flexible program during the academic year, Nova Scholar provides the mentorship and structure to help students excel.
For more details on the full application process, please review our Application Process page.

No, you do not need to have a research question when applying or starting the program. Our structured approach helps students explore their interests, identify key topics, and refine a meaningful research question with the guidance of their mentor. Whether you have a general idea or are starting from scratch, we’ll support you in developing a strong research focus throughout the program.

That’s okay! We understand that things happen. We accept late applications depending on program capacity. Please feel free to apply, and we’ll do our best to support you. If accepted, please note that it may take 1–3 weeks for us to match you with a mentor.

Our mentors are highly qualified graduate-level professionals, including PhDs, MDs, MSs, MBAs, and JDs from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and MIT. They are well-equipped to teach both college undergraduates and secondary school students, bringing expertise, mentorship experience, and a passion for education. Many of our mentors join Nova because they genuinely enjoy working with students and are committed to inspiring the next generation of researchers and innovators. Finding the right mentor is a top priority, as mentorship is a cornerstone of the Nova experience.

The right program for you depends on your goals, experience level, and the level of research support you need:
- Nova Research Standard is ideal for students seeking structured mentorship and guidance while working on an independent research project. It includes access to expert mentors, research resources, and support in developing a strong research paper. Students typically meet with their mentor once per week and complete the program in 2.5 months.
- Nova Research Premium offers a more intensive and personalized experience, with additional mentorship hours, deeper collaboration, and enhanced support for publication and competitions. Many students choose to meet with their mentor twice per week, allowing them to progress faster while still completing the program in 2.5 months.
If you're unsure which option is best for you, feel free to Contact Us—we're happy to help you decide based on your interests and goals!

Our mentor matching process is designed to ensure that each student is paired with a mentor whose expertise aligns with their research interests and goals.
1. Step 1: Application Review – We carefully review your application, including your stated interests and any specific research topics you want to explore.
2. Step 2: Mentor Selection – Based on your interests, we start having conversations with potential mentors and match you with a mentor who has relevant expertise in your field of study.
3. Step 3: Introduction & Refinement – Once matched, you'll meet with your mentor to refine your research topic and begin your project.
While students don’t directly pick their mentor, we take your preferences and research goals into account to ensure a strong fit. If you have specific research interests or mentor preferences, feel free to mention them in your application, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them!

Acceptance rates vary by program—around 60% for Nova Research. However, beyond numbers, we prioritize students with genuine intellectual passion, curiosity, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with mentors.Unlike traditional programs, we don’t require recommendation letters or transcripts because we believe success in a Nova Scholar project is driven by intellectual curiosity and perseverance. Instead, we assess these qualities through direct conversations with students, ensuring that those who join are truly motivated to explore and contribute to meaningful research.

We are committed to selecting students who genuinely care about the work they will be doing. That’s why we evaluate academic depth, curiosity, and commitment to intellectual exploration.
During the application process, we’ll ask about your extracurricular activities, past research experiences, and the topics that excite you most. Our research mentors are eager to work with students who are passionate and engaged, so bring your enthusiasm for the field you care about—it makes a difference!

Your Nova research mentor and Nova publication expert play distinct but complementary roles in your research journey.
- Nova Research Mentor: Your mentor’s primary responsibility is to guide you through the research process—helping you refine your research question, analyze data, and structure your findings. While it’s absolutely fine to discuss your publication goals with them, their main focus is on ensuring the quality and depth of your research.
- Nova Publication Expert: Once your research is complete, your publication expert helps you adapt your paper for submission, ensuring it meets the standards of your target journal or competition. Since high school journals and graduate-level journals have different expectations for research depth, methodology, and formatting, the publication expert plays a key role in guiding you through the submission and review process.
While your mentor helps you conduct research, your publication expert ensures your work is polished and publication-ready—giving you the best chance of sharing your findings with the world.

The time commitment for Nova Research is 4-7 hours per week. This includes mentor meetings, refining research questions, conducting literature reviews and analysis, and writing a structured research paper based on findings

Yes! Nova Research provides students with access to extensive publication databases, guides, and expert support to navigate the research and publication process.
We have significant experience helping students prepare and submit their work for publication, ensuring it meets the standards and expectations of various academic journals. Our students have successfully published in 25+ unique research journals, including the Journal of Emerging Investigators, the National High School Journal of Contemporary Scholarship, and The Schola, among others.
